What is a “BugBlitz”?
The Building Urban Gardens Blitz (or BugBlitz for short) is inspired by the fantastic work that Permablitzes are doing around the world to transform lawns into edible gardens – “Eating the suburbs, one garden at a time.”

In essence, the BugBlitz is a free and casual gathering of two or more people that come together to:
- build edible gardens at someone’s home
- share and learn gardening, and sustainable living skills
- strengthen community
- have fun and eat together!
What happens at a BugBlitz?
Every BugBlitz will be a little bit different, but you can expect to:
- Start the blitz with a cup of tea and an introduction to what will happen that day. We’ll explain the project and design, and then get started.
- Once we begin, you will be shown what to do and you’ll work on a small team. Depending on the project we may start with a quick “workshop” demonstration or just dive in and mentor the group along the way.
- We’ll take snack breaks along the way, share a potluck meal at the end of the day, and bask in the glorios transformation that has occured with all our hard work!
Possible BugBlitz projects include:
- building raised beds for vegetable gardens
- building compost bins
- planting bee and beneficial insect gardens
- planting and pruning fruit tree
- and much more!
Who comes to a BugBlitz?
- Everyone is welcome to join us!
- Anyone interested in learning new gardening skills, and gaining practical food gardening experience should join in!
- There is no commitment to come to every BugBlitz, but the more that you attend the more you will learn because each blitz is different.
- You don’t need to be an expert to join a BugBlitz, all you need is enthusiasm!
